When you get a professional facial, there is no doubt about its immediate benefits.
Things you SHOULD do
There are some things you should do after your facial to keep that healthy glow going longer. Keep the following tips in mind for after your next facial.
1. Keep your skin hydrated and body nourished
Staying hydrated helps your body flush out toxins and absorb nutrients. This is why you should drink plenty of water and use a moisturizer every day. If you aren’t sure which product(s) to use, ask your aesthetician for some professional advice. When it comes to food, you should nourish your body with fruits and vegetables. Not only will this keep you healthy overall, but it will help your skin hold in moisture.
If you aren’t exfoliating, you should add this step to your weekly skincare routine. You should never exfoliate right after a facial, though. It is best to wait two or three days after your appointment. Exfoliating at least once a week will leave your skin feeling smooth, remove oily and dead skin, and give you a nice glow.
3. Use a serum with vitamin C
Using this type of product is great for protecting your skin from harmful air pollution and extreme temperatures. Environmental stressors are actually the biggest threat to healthy, beautiful skin. If you don’t take care of your skin, it will become dull, dry, and even wrinkled. Your aesthetician can help you figure out which type of serum will be best for your unique needs.
4. Follow your aesthetician’s advice
Seeing your aesthetician regularly is important for taking that extra step towards brightening your complexion. But, you shouldn’t neglect your home skincare routine. A reputable aesthetician can help you create an at-home routine that will complement theirs. They have the skills and knowledge to pick the best products for your needs. Be sure to listen to everything they say and follow their tips to get the best skin possible. Tip: Be sure you have found the right professional for you before adding their advice to your routine.
Things you SHOULDN’T do after your facial
Just like there are some things you should be doing after seeing your aesthetician, there are some things you SHOULD NOT do. The following can reverse the effects of your facial and even damage your skin.
1. Don’t go to the steam room
If you are at a spa with a steam room, it could be tempting to go in and relax after your facial. Your appointment probably included a steam treatment. Adding more could actually irritate your skin or break capillaries. Raising your temperature by exercising (and sweating as a result) can also damage your skin.
2. Do not spend too much time in the sun
It is good to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but this is especially true after you get a facial. Your skin is sensitive after this type of treatment and can burn quickly. This can lead to wrinkles and other damage. You should wear 30 SPF+ sunscreen (or moisturizer with sunscreen) to minimize the damage.
3. Don’t get hair removal treatments
It can be tempting to book your hair removal appointments alongside your facial, but you should not do this. Many facials include deep exfoliation, which can leave your skin feeling sensitive. Hair removal treatments, including waxing, shaving, and laser treatments, can all over-exfoliate your skin. It is best to wait at least 24 hours after your facial to go to a hair removal appointment.
4. Avoid retinol and at-home peels
These products are both known to be potent, so shouldn’t use them for at least a week after your facial. Instead, focus on hydration and gentle cleansing in your post-facial skincare routine. Also, even if you still have some acne, avoid treating it with harsh chemicals or popping anything. This will only serve to damage your skin.
